Forest Haven Asylum

(Forest Haven Asylum)

(“Yet while I live, let me not live in vain.”)

Forest Haven Asylum

“Yet while I live, let me not live in vain.”

These words were engraved on a weathered bronze plaque that marked the entrance to the administrative building of “Forest Haven”, an asylum for the intellectually disabled.

Located in Laurel, Maryland, Forest Haven was established in 1925 and spanned 200 acres with 22 buildings. It once housed thousands of intellectually disabled people. Initially, it was an advanced institution that taught practical skills to the intellectually disabled and aimed to help them gain employment.

Unfortunately, due to funding issues and other reasons, Forest Haven eventually evolved into one of the deadliest abusive institutions in recent American history.

Forest Haven Asylum closed in 1991 and the place is now sealed off and off-limits. But due to lax management, it has continued to attract a steady stream of visitors over the past 30 years of abandonment.

“Sunlight filtered through the leaves and dappled the ground with patterns of light like fairy footprints, shimmering with magical radiance…This must be the kind of scenery the founders envisioned when they named this place ‘Forest Haven’.”
