St. Mary of Bethlehem, also known as Bethlehem Royal Hospital, is the oldest psychiatric hospital in the United Kingdom, founded in 1247. It is also one of the earliest hospitals in the world to treat psychiatric patients.
During that time, the incidence of depression in the East End of London was three times higher than in other areas, and schizophrenia was also prevalent. It was once said, ‘London itself is like a vast madhouse, filled with troubled souls.’ And St. Mary of Bethlehem Hospital was a miniature version of London’s madness.

Bethlem Hospital has had four locations: Bishopsgate, London (established in 1247); Moorfields, London (established in 1676); Southwark, London (established in 1815); Beckenham, Kent (established in 1930). The buildings from 1247 and 1676 have been demolished, and the 1815 building has been partially converted into a museum (Imperial War Museum London). The building from 1930 has been preserved in its entirety and renamed ‘Bethlem Royal Hospital.
